Moving images from the media library to a gallery

How does one move an image from the Media Library to a gallery for a page or a post? Once it is in the Media Library it has the title and caption and description, so I would hate to have to write that info each time I use an image on a different page or post. I also would hate to have duplicates of a lot of frequently used images.
