Your local site is built with the WordPress software, while WordPress.com is a hosted service based on that software. You should examine the differences between www.ads-software.com and WordPress.com.

If you want to host a site you’ve built yourself with the WordPress software you need a host that will let you host your own software. Refer to the Hosting page for more information.

Regardless of who you go with, if you’re going to host the website online you’ll need to pay for hosting and a domain name.

I get the difference between the 2 but at some level they are identical, wordpress just choose to not make any meaningful features available for free and online, exactly why i had to set up a server to build this project on.
I would at least expect the import/export feature to be of some use, and stupidly just assumed this, but no, all it does is move content.
If i cant upload my wordpress to the online wordpress whats the frickin’ point, some sort of API should have been developed by now to bridge the 2.
I should add this site will never go live, the requirement is just that it’s on wordpress.com for a week or 2.
The fact a degree course is asking me to use wordpress.com makes me wonder if i should be doing the course anyway, seems like something 12 year olds should be learning basic design on before progressing to code side of things.

It’s really not that simple, they are two separate beasts of software.

I refuse to believe i cant even import a theme and add css and html. That is just ridiculous.
There has to be some connections between the 2, why would you write to software packages that do similar things in completely different ways.
I will be making a complaint to the university about this, expecting us to use this rubbish is a joke.

You cannot freely move your website from one distinguished software known as “self-hosted WordPress” (www.ads-software.com) to another distinguished software known as “WordPress.com”. But it seems those technical limitations are self imposed, i can add remove themes in both versions, i just cant upload my own theme to wordpress.com. I can easily edit html, css and php offline but not online, the natural habitat for those languages. From further reading the only issue i actually have is not paying $25 to upload a theme into wordpress.com, css could maybe be done with a third party plugin. Then its just the php, but the export should be dealing with this.
I can safely say i wont be recommending wordpress to anyone, will refuse to use it in a professional envivironment and frankly dont see what it has to offer beyond headache and restrictions.

Because different users have different needs? Hardly a radical concept. WordPress.com is using the WordPress software to allow people to quickly and easily create a blog but with a limited feature set to dramatically reduce the chances of users breaking things or requiring support. Users with more advanced needs can use the software directly on their own host.

Then the assignment has nothing to do with building your own themes or working with a local development environment.

Different users/needs. ok so why not toggle access to core files on/off. They cant be that different at the core, the same files can be implemented on both versions to get the same result, its just wordpress restrictions making it impossible. its just a ploy to take money i suspect.
No the assignment did not ask for custom theme or development but point and click aimed at kids did not seem suitable either. I want to learn not to be held back.
