Basically, I wanted to move my blog to a new location. I backed up the database using phpMyAdmin, set up a new database and tried importing the old data into the new database, again using phpMyAdmin. Everytime I try, it throws up errors (and if you want to see them, post and I will) and refuses to work. I then realised that the backup was pointing towards the old database, so I manually edited the backup so it pointed to the new database. Saved the file and tried again. And again, it threw up errors, which i do not understand.

Essentially, all I want to do is import all my old posts and comments into a new WordPress blog, which is at a different location and on a different database. The new location is all set up and ready to go, but the data isn’t.

Does anyone know why this would be happening?

Is the old and the new version of WP the same? – the structure of the database table has been changed sometimes, so your best bet would be to make sure your have the same version installed on both places.

And if the versions are not? I also took this “opportunity” to upgrade to 1.5.2 from an older version (around May 2005 time).

I’ll try re-installing the older version and doing what I did before. Thanks Moshu.

Aha! I appear to back where I started – with a fully functional blog and database. And believe it or not, that is exactly what I wanted.

Thanks Moshu, your analysis was correct, and I now know to to install the same version of WP at the new location before moving eveything to it! I have learned my lesson!

    Many thanks.

What part of it “doesn’t work”? Do you see any errors?

it says something about an internal error? i don’t know if it has anything to do with wordpress..but the rest of my site is working..

Make a backup copy of the .htaccess file in WordPress’ directory, then delete all of the contents in that .htaccess file. Now, go to Options/Permalinks in your admin interface, and reset your permalinks.
