Moving to a child theme – what do we need to port?

  • We have authored a reasonable amount of content for our site using the “Responsive” theme. I’ve installed a few plugins as well. I want to tweak a few things in the theme so I figure I should spawn a child.

    My question is: what steps will I need to take after creating and activating the child, i.e. to get the website looking exactly as it was when the parent theme was active?

    I’m assuming all my pages and page content will just “be there” (i.e the stuff I entered with the Page editor).

    Do I need to manually add the customizations I have made to Responsive again to the child theme (stuff like the custom header logo image)?

    What about the settings to plugins such as SlideShow? Will I need to construct the slideshow and load all the images again?

    Are these steps and issues documented somewhere? (I’ve looked).

    None. If the child’s stylesheet is effectively empty (just the comment block at the top) and the child contains no other files, the site’s display will not alter one jot. Your site’s content is never affected by a theme – only the display of that content.

    Yes – as these are only saved on a per-theme basis and a child theme is still classed as a “new” theme.

    No.

    As rule: I always create the child-theme first, then I can play with it without breaking the parent-theme (unless I have back-ups of the files I wish to alter).
