• My parents had a website which they set up on myparentssite.com. I created a new WordPress site for them, in a a subdirectory of my own site, myownsite.com/myparentssite/. Now that I have finished, I have changed the DNS settings for my parents’ site in order to add it as an add-on domain to my own hosting contract, so that myparentssite.com now points to myownsite.com/myparentssite.com/.

I have found a number of instructions describing how to move a site, including moving it to another directory of the same server. but I am unsure about the process if the target directory belongs to an add-on domain, so that the URL is a different one to the path on the server, i.e. the path is myownsite.com/myparentssite/, but obviously the browser will just display myparentssite.com in the address bar.

My concern is that I do something wrong which will cause me to lock myself out of WordPress. In particular, I am not sure what addresses I need to enter under 'Settings > General Settings' in the Dashboard – for 'WordPress Address (URL)' and 'Site Address (URL)'.

Can someone please help me out and let me know what the safest way is to change the directory? Do I need to export and import the database at all, or would it be enough just to edit the settings in the Dashboard?

    Update:

I successfully copied the site to the new directory, and it can now be accessed via myparentssite.com. But obviously I am directed to a subpage of myownsite.com/myparentssite as soon as I click on a link. So I thought it would be a good idea to run Velvet Blues to update the URLs – but unfortunately even entering myparentssite.com/wp-admin in the address bar will redirect me to myownsite.com/myparentssite/wp-login.php (or to be precise, myownsite.com/myparentssite/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myparentssite.com%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1) where I have to log in again before being directed to the dashboard for the old site located in myownsite.com/myparentssite rather than the one in myownsite.com/myparentssite.com/, so if I was to run Velvet Blues from there, I would be updating the wrong installation.

What do I need to do to solve this problem?
