Multi column navigation with wp_nav_menu

    I would like to add some extra functionality to the default output provided by wp_nav_menu. By default , it lists all the sub menu items in 1 column.

    So my question is what is the easiest way to make it appear in multiple column without a plugin.

    I have tried many methods but all in vain.
