Multi Site and new blog creation (sub-directory)

    I have upgrade to WP3 and multisite as instructed, but have run into an issue. The migration itself worked fine, all blogs, all content etc. Very happy. However, now, when creating a new blog it appears to work from site admin, but when visiting any aspect of the new site I (and users) are given a 403- permission denied.
    .htaccess appears to be fine.

    Any guidance/ideas would be most appreciated.
