• Morning all.

I currently run a website for a club night organiser. He put’s on events in London, Greece & Thailand all year round and has been running for 11 years now.

I’ve started working on a new version of his site, and would like to use wordpress as the basis of it all. This will allow me to update easily, and it would add functionality to the website.

Now at the moment, im using a CMS Called “Coranto (formerly Newspro). It’s a CGI based system, and does what it needs to do. I have several catagories, with one covering site updates, one covers latest events etc. ON the front page, i display the latest site updates AND flyers for the latest event.

Is there a plug-in that i can use for WordPress that would allow me to post news to the front page like normal, but also have a section to display the latest flyers whilst still using wordpress to update both?

I dont really want to mess around with URL’s to images and the wordpress style code everytime a new flyer needs to be added.

    Is this possible?

  • The possibilities with WordPress are endless and only limited to your imagination. WordPress is OpenSource (free). Support is volunteer based (free), and there is a plethora of themes and plugins on the web (free) by the vast majority of WordPress users.

There are themes out there you can browse that may have what you’re after. In terms of functionality, you will need to read the The Codex – Getting Started With WordPress to get a better understanding of how WordPress works, as well as codex.www.ads-software.com/The_Loop. It really is interesting reading, and you will learn from it. Guaranteed.

Straight off the bat as a designer, I see no real issue with what you’re wanting. Its just a matter of designing your theme or using a theme that allows sectional compartments to showcase your posts/flyers. https://www.ads-software.com/extend/themes/

To bring posts/flyers to the front page, there is: ShowOnFrontPage – a great plugin that allows you to delegate THAT post and/or lots of posts to the front page of your website just by check marking a box in the Writing Post admin section.

There’s also a whole bunch of other plugins that add extended functionality to your website.https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/.

Additionally, WordPress has tutorials that offer step-by-step examples on how to showcase posts, specific categories, archives, navigational elements, web design, etc, as well as external links of the same effect.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi KatGirl!

Thanks for the detailed reply! WordPress certainly does sound good, especially with the wealth of add-ons, hacks & themes that come with it.

I did go ahead with installing WordPress on the server for my client. After having a few teething problems, i got the host to up the php limit temporarily to allow me to install wp. However, after they reset the limit, wp failed to work due to lack of memory. My client has no real interest in upgrading his account, so wp is out of the window for the time being.

I would mind using wp in the future though for my personal projects.

Thanks for your help KatGirl, it shall come in handy in the future. But until then, it’s back to the drawing board ??
