• Is there a way to allow different ‘types’ of categories? I’m running a foodie site, and I want to categorize the places by ‘food type’ and ‘location’. So from the menu in my site header, I want users to be able to click on “Food Type” and select from a dropdown list of Cafes, Bistros, etc categories there. And they should be able to click on “Location” and select from various location categories.

What is the best way to do this?

  • When setting up categories, set up “Food Type” and “Location” as normal categories.

then set up different food types and the different lcoations as sub categories. You get the option on the left hand side when adding a category – choose the parent category from the dropdown (add the top level categories first)

    Food Type (Parent)
    Pasta (Sub category)
    Bread (Sub category)
    Meat (Sub category)

Hmm. So when I am choosing what category to put a post in, and I want its respective categories to be “Cafe” and “New York”, how does that work? I select ‘Restaurant Type’ category, then select the ‘Cafe’ subcategory, then select ‘Location’ category, then ‘New York’ subcategory? So each post will have 2 categories and at least 2 subcategories?

Yes, you can select multiple categories and sub-categories for a post.
