I use Dreamhost as a provider. Total Upkeep does weekly backups of my 3.7 Gb WordPress site to my google drive. The problem is that every week it sends over three identical backup copies. It sends the first at the scheduled time, then 4 minutes later a second copy, then 4 minutes later a third copy. They all wind up on my google drive for a total of 3 x 3.7 Gb = 11.1 Gb. There seems to be some kind of timeout in Total Upkeep that starts another backup/transfer if it thinks the last one has failed, but in my case the backup/transfer hasn’t failed, it’s just slow. Dreamhost can’t/won’t fix the issue, they advise me that “the best option is to reduce the total size of the domain being backed up” which isn’t at all helpful. All the pre-flight checks on Total Upkeep are fine.

Can this behaviour please be patched/fixed in Total Upkeep?

Hi @anjampie, sorry for the delay and I appreciate you reaching out to us on this issue!

I have a few questions to begin the troubleshooting:

    1. Has this ever worked correctly, or are you setting it up for the first time? If it did previously work, has anything recently changed with your site? (e.g. new theme, plugin, etc)
    2. Is it the same exact backup being uploaded multiple times, or does each one have a unique filename?
    3. In your settings, are you using Cron or WP Cron for the scheduled backups?

    Hi –

Thank you for your question! Sorry to hear you are having trouble with Total Upkeep today. What you are describing is certainly not the intended behavior, we are more than happy to investigate this further for you.

When generating the backups is it generating a single backup that is getting sent to Google Drive multiple times or is the plugin generating multiple backups? It would also be extremely helpful if you could provide the upload log which can be found in your admin dashboard under the left-hand menu and Total Upkeep → Tools.

If you can provide us with that long and info, the information in that file should give us an idea of what went wrong with the upload.

    1. Has this ever worked correctly, or are you setting it up for the first time? If it did previously work, has anything recently changed with your site? (e.g. new theme, plugin, etc)

Nothing has recently changed and this has been the plug-in behaviour for a long while, I’m just now complaining about it. I think this is a “Total Upkeep doesn’t play well with Dreamhost” issue where “large” file transfers have transfer speed throttled by Dreamhost and T.U. doesn’t know how to handle that. Dreamhost has previously increased their PHP timeout setting to try to accomodate T.U. but won’t do anything further suggesting the issue should be fixed on your end.

    Dreamhost says:

Total upkeep time-out settings are related to the PHP execution time
values, I noticed that you already increased these values to actually
pretty high numbers, however, are not applicable as the values are too
high and activate the DreamHost Shared web server monitor service, which
    slows down the process.

This monitor service is necessary since it helps to identify and stop
processes/programs, both bad and good, from unexpectedly hogging up
resources which may directly and negatively affect other users on the
    same server.

    1. Is it the same exact backup being uploaded multiple times, or does each one have a unique filename?

It is the exact same backup uploaded three times. I don’t know if the backup is created three times and each uploaded, or whether one created backup is sent across three times.

    1. In your settings, are you using Cron or WP Cron for the scheduled backups?

    I’m using Cron.

    1. When generating the backups is it generating a single backup that is getting sent to Google Drive multiple times or is the plugin generating multiple backups?

This is difficult to know (see above).

Here’s the log. I’ve been messing with T.U. settings recently trying unsuccessfully to fix the problem, but the automated backups historically have been set for 4:44am on Fridays and there are some entries relevant to that in the below.
