Multiple Domains but root URL always shows

  • I’m new to WP and have installed two different WP installs in two different subdirectories on BlueHost to correspond with two different domains, A.com and B.com. While both websites function independently of one another, the problem is when visitors are directed to B.com, the URL address comes up with A.com preceding B.com’s information — i.e. https://www.A.com/B/?page_id=14

    If I remember correctly, A.com was installed first, and B.com was installed later as an add-on.

    In that I need to the two websites to be completely separate from one another relative to URL and appearances in that they are different companies, can anyone point me in the right direction to what I may have done wrong or what I might need to do to rectify the situation? Thanks!

  • Providing the actual domain names could be helpful.

    When going to B.com, does it always show A.com/B ? If so, you may need to try the following: https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/

    Thanks bh_WP_fan for responding. Actual domain names are https://www.sepiadesign.com (A.com) and https://www.kakibubu.com (B.com). Yes, it typically shows A.com/B when accessing B.com website. Thanks for the link; I’ll have a look to see if I can rectify the problems that way. Please let me know if you have any other ideas.

    I don’t see that problem.

    https://www.kakibubu.com == https://www.kakibubu.com

    The LINKS on the side of your site are goobered, but if I manually go to https://www.kakibubu.com/?page_id=87 or https://www.kakibubu.com/?page_id=91 it works fine.

    When first going to https://www.kakibubu.com/ it shows the correct domain in the address bar, but all the sites links, etc., are linking to the wrong URL.

    The following methods should fix this.
    1) Change the WordPress and Site URL through your Dashboard in General > Settings to https://www.kakibubu.com/
    OR, if you cannot get into the Dashboard for some reason, you can use PHPMyAdmin as was previously shown. Also see: https://wordpress.shadowlantern.com/2010/09/how-change-wordpress-url-phpmyadmin/

    2) If you are still finding links which go to https://www.sepiadesign.com/kakibubu/ then you’ll need to get a find and replace plugin to replace all occurrences of the wrong URL with the right URL

    bh_WP_fan – That’s not completely correct.

    Yes, the site links are wrong, BUT since the correct URLs (ie. https://www.kakibubu.com/?page_id=91 etc) work, that means that the WordPress and Site URLs are fine. And by the way, you can’t change them on your Dash that way in WP MultiSite. ??

    Which begs the question … Why aren’t you using MultiSite? You can totally have that setup, and WordPress will transparently fix the URLs.

    (this is the multisite forum, intended to help with MultiSite/Network installs, not multiple installs of WP)

    Thanks bh_WP_fan and ipstenu for your great feedback. For Kakibubu, I changed the Site URL within the general options on the Dashboard, which seemed to fix the problem — thank you! This solved my primary problem.

    I then went back to Sepia and tried to change the Site URL for that one to delete the “/newsepiasite” suffix (which corresponds with the folder in which that particular WP installation is located), but had no luck — that subdirectory still appears in the URL address, which is still acceptable, but not great. So I then (stupidly) changed the WP URL of that site which immediately dumped me out of the entire WP interface (yes, I have no idea what I’m doing). I then had no choice but to enter the terrifying world of the hosting company’s PHPMyAdmin interface and miraculously managed to change those fields back manually to get my WP Dashboard interface back.

    ipstenu, the multisite setup sounds like the hot tip. I’ve found some basic WP tutorials etc on how to migrate existing blogs into a completely new installation to enable multisite, but would you happen to know of any other detailed tutorials (or alternate methods) that address migration of existing blogs and their content in more detail? I would like to try to migrate my existing blogs, but I have a fear both of my blogs will get lost in the process. Any advice would be appreciated.

    ipstenu – You are correct, if the WordPress and Site URL are both already correct, however, the Site URL can be set differently, depending on how/where the content is being accessed.

    jamiddy – I’m glad it worked for you. ??

    As far as your current question, the biggest thing to make sure of is to have a good backup. That way, if anything goes wrong, you can always restore back to the original setup again if needs be.

    You can use the Backups tool in the cPanel to get a full backup, or you can manually backup your files and databases.

    bh_WP_fan – thanks; I will definitely make a backup and give the multisite setup a try. Thanks again for all of your assistance! I might be back on this forum if the multisite setup gets mucked up … ??

    I too have had the same issue as Jamiddy. I made the same changes in the GENERAL SETTINGS tab and it seemed to fix the problem with one exception.

    If you go to my secondary site (www.lunstrumwindows.com/new) the index page is shown correctly and so are the other pages as you navigate through the menu. But if you go back to the home page through the menu on the site, it shows the primary url (www.lbc-construction.com/lunstrumwindows.com/new).

    I can’t ever have users see the primary. Please help.
