I am using version 1.3.9.5 with WordPress 4.4.0

When a new post is published, my subscribers receive anything ebtween 5-20 of the same emails.

I have tried disabling *every* plugin at once, and left just BNFW activated and made a test post – the same thing happens – users receive many emails exactly the same.

I then received an email from my webhost:

A new message or response with subject:

Warning: 4191 emails have been sent yesterday by #########

has arrived for you to view.
Follow this link to view it:

Does anybody have any ideas what may be causing the hook to be called several times, or what hook is actually being called?

I tried making a new notification and set it to only email Administrators – of which there are 2 of them. When making a test post with just this notification, it appears to only send the email once to each administrator. As soon as I change back to have it sent to ‘Subscribers’, each subscriber receives multiple emails each time a post is published.

    Hi shotbyaj,
It’s most odd as the problems introduced that were causing the multiple notifications were reversed in a recent update.

Are you able to try with an older version of the plugin and see if that helps? You can compare details of versions in the Changelog and grab the files from here.

Let me know how you get on.

    Thanks,
    Jack

I have downgraded to version 1.3.9.3 – I will see if that is any better as soon as the next post is added

Downgraded to 1.3.9.3 and the issue is still the same.

I am currently getting lots of emails come through as I type this – I am currently at 15 emails.
The first email has a timestamp of 23:37, and the last email has a timestamp of 23:43

Do you have any idea what part of the code would be causing this and I would be more than happy to look through it myself as if the issue cannot be resolved, I wont be able to use the plugin as this is annoying all of my subscribers, as well as my webhost.

    Hi shotbyaj,
Can you try 1.3.9.2? This was the last version before any issues were reported.

If this doesn’t work, can you please reply with the exact configuration of the notification(s) that are causing the multiple emails to be sent out? Please include all information including which checkboxes are ticked, which users / user roles are selected, etc. Feel free to sensor any email addresses or domains that you don’t want to display here though.

    Thanks,
    Jack

1.3.9.2 works as expected. Are there any known security risks at present with using this version?

    Plugin Author bnfw

    (@voltronik)

No security risks, no. Just a few less features.
I am testing this issue extensively but so far i’ve had no luck in replicating it.

Have you had any luck at your end? Any testing / plugins causing issues?

Nothing that I can see which is causing it. All plugins had been disabled. If you’re willing to give me a point in the right direction instead of me scouring through the entire source, I am more than familiar with PHP and write many private API’s for various companies, so I could take a look through the code and do some testing myself if you could give me some pointers on where to look

    Hi shotbyaj,
    Are you using PHP7?

The server that I am running this particular site on is 5.4.44 if I recall correctly. However, I can simply migrate to another server running PHP7 for testing purposes should it be needed.

    (@voltronik)

No, that’s ok. Don’t worry about PHP7 for now.

In order to better troubleshoot, can you tell me the following information:

    1. How many people are configured to receive this notification?
    2. Whether they are in the To, CC or BCC fields.
    3. How many average page views your site receives on a day and month.
    4. Are you using any external services like SendGrid to send the notifications?

Once I have this, I should have a better idea of what is going on.

    Thanks,
    Jack

    (@shotbyaj)

    1 – Approx 200 users
2 – Subscribers is set in the ‘To’ field – CC and BCC are empty
    3 – Approx 1500 page views per day – 45000 per month
    4 – No external services

    @shotbyaj,

Could you try putting an administrator’s name in the To field, with Subscribers in the BCC field?

Then you should get just one email sent out per event.

KTS915 has a good suggestion – shotbyaj, can you try that and see how you get on?

It’s not ready yet but can I have a (virtual) show of hands by way of a reply to this thread (or emoji) for anyone that’s still reading this and prepared to beta test a version of the plugin that might fix this, particularly for those of you that run larger / higher-traffic sites?

    Thanks,
    Jack

    Hi Jack and everyone reading.

Same problem, solved by downgrading to BNFW: 1.3.9.2

Do you recommend staying with this version?

We can try the beta version as soon as possible.
