Multiple emails being sent – webhost is unhappy

    I am using version 1.3.9.5 with WordPress 4.4.0

    When a new post is published, my subscribers receive anything ebtween 5-20 of the same emails.

    I have tried disabling *every* plugin at once, and left just BNFW activated and made a test post – the same thing happens – users receive many emails exactly the same.

    I then received an email from my webhost:

    Does anybody have any ideas what may be causing the hook to be called several times, or what hook is actually being called?

    I tried making a new notification and set it to only email Administrators – of which there are 2 of them. When making a test post with just this notification, it appears to only send the email once to each administrator. As soon as I change back to have it sent to ‘Subscribers’, each subscriber receives multiple emails each time a post is published.

  • I just got out of Crisis mode after 3 hours. Running latest plugin. Tested fine when we were working on out new site. Launched site yesterday, today, 1200 members received 50 emails of one notification. Was THE WORST experience of my web career! Members and client were VERY UPSET! Spend 3 hours on phone with GoDaddy and Email host to understand what the heck happened.

    Just to share: Someone published a post. An INTERNAL SERVER ERROR came up, then cleared. Then the gates of Hell opened. Not sure if related,but thinking not since reading this. At least it’s not me, but hard to explain that to client.

    Hi ockographics,

    You say this worked in testing – is your testing environment different from you production environment? If so, are you able to explain? Additionally, how did you test sending notifications on your testing environment?

    If you’re also able to reply with this information, that would be very helpful in trying to pin down this very elusive problem:

    How many people are configured to receive this notification?

    Whether they are in the To, CC or BCC fields.

    How many average page views your site receives on a day and month.

    Are you using any external services like SendGrid to send the notifications?

    Sorry, not willing to test this on site again. If I still have a job with them, I’d rather send email notice via mailchimp or other.

    Just launched so page views are under 100. No CC or BCC. Sending to all subscribers, admins, editors (1200). Tested on windows server April 1. v 1.3.9.5. Had 10 users for test. Used SendGrid as emails not being sent initially from WP. Loaded 1200 members. Cloned to Linux host at GoDaddy. Email in general settings WP is at mail server plan with Windows host.

    Using no third party email plugin on Linux. Emails send so no need for SendGrid, etc.

    Can I relax and know no more emails in a cue to be sent?

    Firstly, if BNFW is causing the issue, i’d recommend deactivating it or downgrading to 1.3.9.2 which several users have reported to work but I recommend you test this first.

    You can use something like Mailtrap.io in your testing environment to ensure emails aren’t delivered to users whilst still using your production database if you want.

    Any queues are held at wherever your email is sent via so it’s worth checking with them just in case.

    Additionally, i’m curious to know if multiple emails are sent when you only try to send it to a very small number of users – say between one and ten?

    So, would you recommend to stay in 1.3.9.2?
    What is the point in upgrading?
    This is a serious problem that affects the site, the mail server and the end user. Hope to hear from you if any other solution.

    For now, yes I recommend staying on that version. You’ll just get slightly less features by being on an older version.

    A fix is being worked on with high priority.

    I have a beta version for you to try that might fix the multiple notifications issue that you’ve been experiencing.

    If you could contact me directly via the BNFW website, I’ll send you a copy for testing.
    Just know that I can’t take any responsibility for any issues that you may encounter and I strongly recommend that you do not test on a production (live) site if you’re worried about what it might / might not do.

    Hate to say this but even after the 1.4.1 update we are still getting two emails per notification.

    Hi rbtd,

    All the feedback I’ve had so far is that it’s now working as expected with no duplicates. Are you able to clear any transients using an appropriate plugin (such as WP-Optimize) and try again?
