All of my Google Web Stories have started experiencing errors. It seems that all 15 stories I have created now have the following errors:
    – The parent tag of tag ‘html’ must be ‘!doctype’.
    – A tag on this page requires an AMP component ‘script’ tag, which is missing.
    – A mandatory AMP HTML tag is missing from this document.

And some also have the error:
    – Missing URL for attribute ‘data-tooltip-icon’ in tag ‘$reference_point’.
    – Tag ‘AMP-STORY-GRID-LAYER animate-in’ has a disallowed child tag.
    – The tag ‘link rel=canonical’ appears more than once in the document.

I was seeing a massive surge in traffic from one particular story until I started experiencing these errors. I noticed an email from Yandex Webmaster around the same time which said that it had removed some of the stories from the search results due to low revenue or pageviews. I quickly deleted my site from Yandex and removed the account. I tried to resubmit the URLs to Search Console but keep getting the error that the web stories are invalid and aren’t being shown in the search results.

I had read about a recent compatibility issue with Yoast and web stories (https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/web-stories-no-activity-with-yoast-plugin-fix/), which I do use, but it sounds like it should be resolved. I came across another post (https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/google-web-stories/) that recommended resubmitting a sitemap to Google but I wanted to see if this might help my situation?

    Any help is appreciated!

  • @alysa841 Hi there! Thank you for reporting. Hopefully, we can determine the cause of these validation errors.

Could you please share your Site Health information? You can share privately if you prefer. This way we can check for any plugins that may be conflicting with Web Stories plugin.

While we investigate your Site Health info, could you attempt to troubleshoot your site by temporarily disabling all other plugins for a few minutes and switch to a different theme to see if that makes a difference?

Then, test your affected story at https://search.google.com/test/amp to see if there are still the same errors.

Next, start by re-enable your theme and test your story again. You can re-enable your plugins one by one and retest your story to see which, if any, are conflicting with the Web Stories plugin and causing these errors.

Please let me know if you need any additional support on this.

Hi @luckynasan Thank you so much for your quick response! Sending the info privately now.

I’ll attempt troubleshooting in the meantime. Thank you!

@alysa841 thanks! So I am currently only seeing the following errors on the story URL you referenced:

    – The parent tag of tag ‘html’ must be ‘!doctype’.
    – A tag on this page requires an AMP component ‘script’ tag, which is missing.
    – A mandatory AMP HTML tag is missing from this document.

Web Stories are AMP documents and must adhere to the required specifications in order to be validated. The Ezoic plugin appears to be injecting/removing required scripts such as the AMP required <!DOCTYPE html> code from your stories. You can try disabling WordPress integration in the Advanced Settings of the Ezoic plugin to get rid of these errors and I recommend to reach out to their support for additional assistance.

    – Missing URL for attribute ‘data-tooltip-icon’ in tag ‘$reference_point’.

Could check if the story affected by this error has a description text and an icon? Those can be added in the design panel on the right under the “Link” section.

Could you share what Stories are affected by the other errors?

Who is your hosting provider and are you using any CDN service like Cloudflare?

    Hi @luckynasan

I just removed the Ezoic plugin and went through to validate all of the errors and it seems that Search Console is in the process of validating so I think the error has been solved!

Another web story that had been receiving other errors is this one: https://voyagingherbivore.com/web-stories/vegan-edinburgh/ but I think it may be fixed now or will be in a few days with the pages have been validated.

I’ll reach out to Ezoic to let them know about the issue.

Thank you so so much for your help!

    @luckynasan

One more question as I’m seeing now that I have some breadcrumb issues with web stories in SC.

11 of my Web Stories are experiencing these errors:
    – Either “name” or “item.name” should be specified
    – Missing field “item”

One web story with this issue is: https://voyagingherbivore.com/web-stories/uk-summer-train-journeys/

Are you able to provide a fix for these?

    Thank you!

@alysa841 Great to hear the issues are resolved!

Regarding the breadcrumbs, it appears that you are using Yoast SEO, which is solely responsible for printing breadcrumbs on your pages, including Web Stories. Unfortunately, you’ll also have to reach out to their support team for assistance in this regard.

Let us know if you need additional support from us based upon their reply.

I am getting the exact same error messages on all 36 of my stories (previously no errors), and I too have Ezoic. Did suppressing the plugin work? Is there another solution to be able to keep the ad network?

    (@alysa841)

@swirlzandcurlz I removed Ezoic and all of them are in the process of passing! I also contacted Ezoic and they’re looking into it so hopefully it will be fixed soon.

@alysa841 Do you not have ads on your site at all now?

@swirlzandcurlz Just a reminder that we encourage opening a new topic per forum guidelines.

Disabling the WordPress integration in Ezoic Advance Settings will remove those errors, but for further assistance and support I recommend to contact the Ezoic support.

@swirlzandcurlz I wasn’t fully set up with Ezoic yet so I’m still using Google Ads as I as before. I’ll wait until they fix the problem before setting up with them fully.

    @luckynasan Sorry! I didn’t know. Thank you.

@alysa841 We’ll close the topic here, but if you need any additional support on the Web Stories plugin please feel free to open a new support topic. Thanks!
