Multiple Images in Uploads Folder

  • When uploading photographs or screen shots for insertion into a blog post, I notice that seven photographs show up in the uploads folder. While it is the same image, there are seven different dimensions. As one might expect, this begins to soon load up the hosting server.

    Do I have something set incorrectly in WordPress that multiple images and multiple screen shots are showing up when I meant to upload only one. I don’t want to go in and delete the excess files every time I upload a screen shot or photograph. Solutions please and thanks in advance.

  • It could be caused by your theme or plugin(s). Really depends on the features of them. I believe WordPress default is four different sizes.

    It’s because WordPress, by default, creates different size images for you to use in your posts/pages: large, medium, small, and thumbnail. If you upload something larger than your “large” dimension, it will create all four. That way, if you upload a large image but just want to display it small on your website, it will use the smaller image (which is crunched at upload and a smaller file size).

    You didn’t do anything wrong — this is the default behavior of WordPress. You can play with the settings on the Settings->Media page to see if you can trick WordPress into not creating the additional files.

    I remember seeing someone stating that you could set the setting sizes to 0 and it might work, but I’ve never had to try this.

    If anyone know how to trick WordPress into accepting only one image per upload, let me know. I tried a few combinations inside Settings->Media and have yet to find the correct settings.
