• Hi,
Since the 5.4 upgrades, my dashboard has changed and is missing left sidebar. The view post link at the top bar is gone. The blocks constantly give an error and the page has to be editing on code view. When the visual editor is working, if I highlight some text or try to edit something, the page jumps to another section of the page, either the centre of the page of the top and I have to scroll back again to find what I was working on. It’s made editing the website all but impossible.

All I did was an update to the lest version, nothing more. And this has happened at the worst time as I am doing some major SEO work. It’s stressing me out totally, please help.
    Sincerely,
    Ross.

  • Hi Ross here’s a quick guide to resolve some of your issues:

    • To view the sidebar (exit full-screen mode) click the three vertical dots at the top right of the screen next to the cog, then under view uncheck “Fullscreen mode”
    • While you’re still on more tools and options, just below the “View” options you can change the “Editor” options. Click “Visual Editor” to disable the “Code Editor”. It might be worth exploring the rest of the options in case there’s something else you’re missing.
    • to view the post link click on the title and the post link will appear
    • Unfortunately I can’t help with the error you are receiving. Can you share an error message or screenshot of it?
    • I’m also not sure what may be causing the text to “jump”. For error and this issue, I suggest installing and activating the Health check plugin and heading over to wp-admin Tools > Site Health to troubleshoot what may be causing issues.

Edit: I highly recommend you create a backup before making any further updates to your site to be safe.

    Hi Nigel,
Thank you very much for the help. My bad with the full screen issue. I was focusing on the block editor issue and didn’t realise my own stupidity re Fullscreen mode.

But the block editor issue is ongoing. I cannot edit blocks in visual mode.

    Before I click
    After clicking

I have since upgraded the hosting to 7.3 (it was 7.0).

The only critical issue is “All automatic updates are disabled.” But I do get the notifications for WordPress updates and now have the latest WordPress version 5.4.

But this issue only started after updating.

If you are running any kind of caching, please make sure it is cleared out. All of it, multiple times as I’ve seen this come up in WordPress 5.4 upgrades due to caching.

Thanks for the help Malcolm. I cleared out the cache (WP fastest Cache) 7 or 8 times, all of it. Still the same issue, although I do have a little more info. It’s specifically the paragraph and headings blocks that won’t work. I get the “This block has encountered and error and cannot be previewed.” every time I try to create a new one. Absolutely no idea what is going on.
