• I’ve got a new site, running for just a few weeks now.

For the second time, a user has contacted me by Twitter, to let me know they had posted a comment to a recent post, but it wasn’t showing up.

In both cases, I checked, and found their comment had been placed in Trash.

    • I’m not using any comment- or spam-related plugins. (Specifically, I’m not using Akismet – which is installed, but deactivated. My active plugins are: Contact Form 7; Jetpack; MOJO Marketplace, and Yoast SEO.)
    • I do not moderate comments, except those with multiple links (none of the affected comments had links; comments with multiple links have been reaching the “Pending” queue just fine).
    • The word-match-lists for both Comment Moderation and Comment Blacklist are empty, nor do those text boxes contain any blank space.
    • The first user has since written additional comments with no issue; the second user had previously written other comments with no issue. Other people have written multiple comments with no issue.
    • In the second case, the user wrote a second comment (which mostly copied the first one, although it was not identical), which also went directly to the Trash.

Obviously, this is a pain in the neck; I don’t even get an email (like I do for a comment that is posted, or that goes to moderation), so unless I check in on the trash or somebody tells me specifically, I can miss these cases entirely.

Any ideas what the problem might be, or what I can do to improve matters?

    Thanks,

    –Ziv

  • I am having this same issue, but slightly different. I have people who have been previously approved to comment, where some comments are processed straight through properly, and others are sent straight to trash. I don’t even get a notification that they’ve commented, so I don’t know it’s there, sometimes until days later.

I am using Askimet, but it’s not being marked as spam, so I don’t think that’s the problem.

I don’t have anything in the blacklist and the comments did not include 2 links or more, which would’ve then been put into the pending section, not trash.

Not sure if this is the fix, but the same thing was happening to a client site and I just updated Akismet and it’s not happening anymore. Although I didn’t test again before I updated. I was about to deactivate Akismet.
