Multisite compatible?

No, it’s not multisite compatible. I have no particular plans to make it so as multisite is rather niche. If someone hired me commercially I would do it, but otherwise it won’t happen (unless someone else writes a patch and sends it in).

I actually don’t think so. “Niche“ defines a very narrow area of why multisite has been introduced to WordPress, but anyways…..

I still think it would be great if and when you provide FULL WordPress v3.5 compatibility.

PS: In the meantime (if someone is interested) BackWPup does an excellent job for multisites as well. We use it on all of our multisites and works out of the box.

Multi-site isn’t as niche or as scary as some people may think. There seem to be a fair number of people using it. I am testing this plugin on two multi-site installs and have done the following:

Network Activate and configure the backup through the main blog. (Need to be Super Admin to do this.)

I see only two things that need to happen in order for this plugin to function correctly with multi-site. Both of which the plugin SHOULD be doing already.

1 – Grab ALL database tables.

2 – Make sure ALL of wp-content is backed up minus any cache folders. (Multi-site adds two folders: blogs.dir; mu-plugins)

Am I missing anything?

Yes, it backs up all db tables (that have the WordPress prefix – not any other applications you’re using in the same MySQL database), and backs up anything in wp-content (except what you explicitly exclude).

The only thing I thought of was, if you network activate, then aren’t you giving all blogs the ability to back up and restore the entire network? i.e. a potential security/privacy breach. So, my thoughts on what needed doing was, I need to change some admin checks for super-admin checks, and store settings in the site rather than in the current blog. Was that how you understood it?

You have confirmed that the backup sequence works as I expected. Since my wife and I are the only people with dashboard access to our sites I hadn’t considered permissions for other users.

If you make the settings available on the Network Admin page only and suggest Network Activation for multi-site, that should take care of the permissions problem. Technically that is where it belongs anyway for a multi-site install.

Gary, unfortunately WordPress multisite has a very different set of internals for dealing with network-admin settings as opposed to blog settings. It’s a whole load of different code.
