• Hi,

I am working on my new website which will go from WordPress.com to www.ads-software.com (so a real website).

The website is already bilingual (French/English), and since now I did it with 2 posts each time, one in English and one in French. So I have two times the posts I should really have.

I am hesitating between working with a translation plugin or a multisite installation. For the plugin I have chosen TranslatePress – Multilingual which allows me to translate everything for free (except the slugs but never mind, I don’t sell anything). For the multisite installation I would use MultilingualPress.

I also have two domain names. The .fr leads to the .com.

For you, what would be the best tool?

I like the simplicity of the plugin but it will require a lot of work to re-translate (copy-paste) my articles, and erase the duplication. For the posts in double, I would put a redirection in the Htaccess.

The multisite seems to offer the advantage of no extra work. I clone my website and for the first erase all the French content, and for the second all the English content, and I can also separate both between the domain name .fr and .com.

    Thanks for you help.

I think you are focusing too much on how to transition your current content when you should be thinking about future content. Even if the ideal future configuration makes transitioning difficult, you transition once and it’s done and forgotten. If you go the easy way for a transition that is not ideal into the future, you will have to live with that choice for a good long while.

There’s a general rule that we should not use multisite unless it’s clear there is no other choice. There are several drawbacks to multisite you shouldn’t wish to take on unless there is no other choice. I advise you to stay with a single site if at all possible. Whatever adjustments you need to make should be able to be done through the right script or query.
