• I am a teacher who wishes to train several students to use WordPress. I want for each student to learn how to install and activate plugins, create and modify blogs and pages, add media and links, so they could create their own websites.
I am wondering whether I should use the Multisite feature (assigning each site to a student) or if it would be more efficient to create new installations in different directories in my WordPress site.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

  • I would recommend that you create separate installations as it is closer to real world for your students.

I disagree. Multisite would work just fine in this scenario,

Esmy, but I think the Multisite configurations are a bit complicated, since they are students, just stats to learn WP, I think it would be better to start from the basic installation.

The students wouldn’t need to handle any of the multisite configuration. They’d be creating sub-sites. But it would mean that the OP could be Super Admin with a single login.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I am under the impression that Multisite implies that all the sub-users must use the same plugins and themes as the super admin. If that is the case, wouldn’t it be restrictive for students who wish to explore WP?

    Incorrect.

They CAN use the same themes and plugins, they don’t HAVE to.

They also cannot install their own themes and plugins, but the Super Admin can install any they need (or want). Rookies rarely need a lot. Heck, I run sites that just have Akismet.
