Multisite or Separate domain for student interface?

  • I am working for a company that has a public facing promotional website for their training programs. This currently works well. We also need to have the equivalent of a student portal, with private content related to the courses.

    My question: would it be wise to separate this content (the public site and the private student interface) into either multisite or separate domains? Particularly so any course/e-learning content and payment management would be all in its own install and the public facing site would be simply promotional? Any thoughts would be much appreciated from an organizational perspective on why or why not to use multisite versus have everything in one site.

    I couldn’t find a specific answer to this question, even using Google. If anyone knows of an answer to this inquiry already, I’d love a link!

    I have experience with an High School in Buenos Aires.
    They have the same problem!

    Question:

    – What is the process of students to start a course?
    – Sell online courses?
    – It’s private materials for students?

    – If you recommend to sell courses Sensei, WooThemes plugin to sell courses.

    – If you need a network for high school / college, I recommend Multisite to manage on one hand the institutional site and on the other the virtual campus.
