• I’m a stickler about updates. I maintain a large number of WordPress sites, several of which are multisite. I’m seeing this only on multisites, but I am seeing it on all of them.

    When I log into a sub-site, as the super-admin, I’m notified of pending updates in the bar at the top of the page. There is a circular arrow with the number of updates. If I click on that icon, I go to the WordPress updates page on the main site.

    I then update all of the plugins, themes, etc. and go back to the sub-site. The sub-site still shows the arrow with the number. I find these updates still showing even a couple of days after I have done them.

    These sites are all on SiteGround, and there is advanced caching enabled. I have purged that cache repeatedly, and the number still shows as not updated.

    When I click the icon, it shows that all updates have been done. At this point, I need to verify that all updates are done each time I log into a multisite. I can’t trust the icon.

    Am I the only one with this problem? Aside from hosting and security plugins (WordFence, CleanTalk), each of the other multisites have different themes, plugins, etc.

    I checked with the WordFence folks, but they recommended that I ask here.

  • What is this ‘advanced caching’ you mentioned? Something is remembering that ‘update needed’ state and that smells like a cache issue to me or a plugin interfering with the clearing of that notification.

    Is that ‘advanced caching’ a Sitegruong proxy setup or something? Did you ask Siteground for help?

    If this was my multisite I’d install the Wapuu Dashboard Pet plugin as I’m wondering how that would react in this situation. Seeing how that acted might send me on to a different idea then but I’d probably install the Cache Enabler plugin next just to add the cache-control headers to my files. Those headers can make all the caches including the browser cache, the host proxy, and midstream cache proxies behave.

    Once you’ve got a handle on this problem you might leave the Wapuu running. I run that on all my sites.

    Same with the Cache Enabler… if it’s not causing a problem with anything then keep it.

    One final thought… you’re the super admin there… you don’t need to jump to updates when there’s an update alert. As the super admin, you can use some discretion choosing when to do updates and where. I’ll sometimes wait several days or even months on some updates. It’s good to keep up with those things but they are seldom ‘mission-critical’.

    Thanks, but ignoring updates won’t solve the underlying issue. I appreciate the spirit of the advice, though. I’m not panicking about updates, but I do find that keeping things updated increases security.

    Yes, SiteGround has the additional caching — one of the great things about working with them. I mentioned their cache because I wanted to point out that I was already clearing cache on the server…but I take your point. There may be other caches…in which case working with SG would probably not solve the problem since their cache is already cleared. I did disable their caching plugin and test, and the problem did not resolve.

    I’m going to investigate the other caches you mention.

    So am I the only one having this problem? Or just the only one who noticed?
