• I recently encountered the following error message upon activation of a new network.

Because your install is not new, the sites in your WordPress network must use sub-domains. The main site in a sub-directory install will need to use a modified permalink structure, potentially breaking existing links.

I went back uninstalled and re-installed the instance of wordpress and still had the same error message. I found a hack (https://journalxtra.com/2010/07/how-to-force-multi-site-to-use-subdirectories/) that referenced andrea_r article original post (https://wpmututorials.com/basics/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-creating-a-network-of-multiple-sites-in-3-0/). After following these instructions I was able to change the format after activation of the network from sub domains, to sub folders. I still did not understand why I could not choose sub folders from the start as it was not an old install, but that is another issue. I was able to create a new site as the network administrator, and name it domain.com/test. However upon loading this page I received a 404 error message. I am using a hosting account with Host Gator, and have been told by andrea_r that this is a host issue. I have contacted them to let them know my new htaccess file is not being read properly and they will have to force it. I have not yet heard back, but want to make sure this is the reason for my problems which I am experiencing. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, which is why I reached out to the host concerning the htaccess file. However I did not correlate the parallel between the two problems? My installation comes back with a 404 error, it is not as if it is loading with no styles.

If this is a brand new instance, did you point to a new database?

I used Host Gator to first uninstall the previous installation. I then went back in check that no files existed in the FTP, and re-installed it using their installation wizard. They auto assign the DB, etc.

The no styles is basically a 404 on the stylesheet alone.

Both issues mean the htaccess file is not being read properly.

If this is a add-on domain to your web account and not the MAIN domain, this is why.

This is the primary domain on the hosting account. In the public_html directory.

Awesome. Then they really mucked up. ??

Still a host issue – still relating to the htaccess file not being read properly.

You can always try making yet another test site. It’s still one click and you can delete them later. Just pick a different name that is not similar to any existing pages.
