• Hi.

I’d like to setup a Multisite-Network on my web server (shared hosting) root. In the root are currently in different sub-directories single WordPress installations.

After installing Multisite in root, one of the single installations did not work anymore and generated a 403 Forbidden Error. After renaming the .htaccess in the root, it worked again. The other single sites did work.

Also I can’t access any Multisite Dashboard anymore, this worked before.

So my question is: Can I have a Multisite-Network in my root and ad the same time single WordPress installations in sub-directories that are independent form the Multisite?

    THanks.

  • Yes you can, but you should add custom .htacces files in the subfolders.

Also, a good practise is not to do that but having custom folders for each wordrpress installation such as
    – Root
    — Main Site
    — Site 2
    — Site 3
    .

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I found out that the .htaccess file in the root and the .htaccess file in the folder for that site that is affected by the 403 error are causing this problem.

Do you know what phrase/code I have to find in these .htaccess files that might cause the error?

When I install Multisite, then the main site (= the multisite network administration site) is in the root folder, right?

And all additional sites are stored within the root installation, there is no sub-directory for them, right?

So right now my situation is:

    /root –> WP MultiSite Installation
/root/site1 –> Older WP site (before multisite-installation); working
/root/site2 –> Older WP site (before multisite-installation); working
/root/site3 –> Older WP site (before multisite-installation); not working
