Mutlisite network not showing in tools

Hi everyone,

This is my first ever post on wordpress.

Never having used WP before, I have spent the last few days installing and editing a new site. I now wanted to have multiple sites with subdomains.

I created a new subdomain, directoryand MySql database on my host server, uploaded WP 3.5 on my ftp and hey presto everything connected. Great! Well, not so….I copied and pasted the following into my wp-config.php file after configuring it with the new database information-
/* Multisite */
define(‘WP_ALLOW MULTISITE’, true);

just above where it says –
/* That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */

I’ve tried it in multiple locations within the file and with and without the –
/* Multisite */

I must have read all the articles on installation on the entire internet and still ‘Network’ simply will not show up in tools.

I am utterly and completely exasperated and wonder why on earth it does not work. It is usually something simple like apostrophes but, no, not in this case.

No postings on this site so far have proved fruitful. If there is anyone out there that has any useful advice then I would be ever so grateful to hear from you. When explaining what to do please use noddy language (be simple) even though I seem to know what I’m doing I’m still a beginner.
