    Hi, WP users:

In an attempt to foil people who might want to hack into my WP installation, I didn’t choose “admin” for my admin user name; I chose something long and convoluted that couldn’t be easily guessed. Imagine my horror when testing my install and saw that long and convoluted admin name attached to my posts and replies! Grrr! In my profile, I’d chosen to “Display name publicly as ‘admin'” but that’s clearly not what’s happening, as I asked a friend to view the blog then send me a screenshot and there was the big-ass convoluted name I’d picked and want to keep SECRET.

Is this a bug, or am I misunderstanding something? I’d like folks to THINK my user name is “admin,” but behind the scenes, it’s not.

    Thanks for any tips,

    Binky

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    Hi, Esmi:

The theme switch idea was excellent, but it didn’t yield any results; my secret admin name still shows.

I only have one plug-in (Akismet), which I disabled) until I get this problem solved, and disabling that didn’t change anything, either.

    Nertz.

    Good suggestions, though!

Try adding a first name in your Profile page and then, after you’ve saved that change, switch the display name over to your new first name.

That sounded like the answer, esmi, but that didn’t do it. it’s still showing my username instead of the name I want displayed.

I’d go into the database and change that name by hand, but I still don’t want whatever name I choose to be shown. It shouldn’t be this hard! It oughtta do as it says it’ll do.

Am I the only one who picked a username besides the default “admin”?

No. I rarely use admin as a login name.

And the name you use isn’t showing up on your blog, esmi?

Which one? ?? Seriously, I have 3 active blogs and I’m currently maintaining about 18 different themes. They all show different things for the post author. Some show nothing at all.

Do you know what you theme is using to generate the post author’s name?

Oh, esmi! You just gave me an idea: I’ll just go modify the theme to show what I want it to show! Der! All this banging my head on the desk, and all I had to do is a small modification! What have I been thinking?! (I clearly haven’t; it’s been a couple years since I built any blogs, so I’m out of the habit.)

Thanks a million for the inspiration! Big smooches and huggies, sweetie! You’re the best! Sometimes it helps to talk things out with someone, and it clearly worked here; I appreciate you a lot!

Glad I could help – albeit in a roundabout way. ??
