That is rather odd, I wonder what’s interfering there.

Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Fifteen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

    Hi James,

I deactivated all the plugins and it didn’t make any difference. If I change the theme will that screw anything up?

No, and you’ll be able to safely switch the theme back if it turns out to not be the source of the problem.

I just did a test share and link was: https://plus.google.com/115603726834701124554/posts/aVgCnPvRwfh which shows the post I made on G+.

Now, my G+ still uses the user ID and not a name like yours.

Ok, this is really bizarre. Clicking the link in the G+ post sends me to a 404 page with this in my address bar: https://madgeshatbox.com/june-16-today-in-hat-history/ but if I copy and paste the URL it loads fine.

    Hmmm…

Yeah, something has to be interfering on the site’s end, issuing a 404 to anything coming from Google+.

Yep, it’s related to the referrer being Google+. I went into Firefox and set network.http.sendRefererHeader to “0” which disables sending the header. After that, I was able to click on her link and see the post.

    So Mark,

I really appreciate you and James working on this issue. Based on your last coment, how do I fix the problem?

    Pam

You have something in your blog that is looking at the referrer and if it happens to be G+, kills it.

Do you have some kind of stats or analytics plugin installed? If so, might deactivate those and see what happens. Wonder if some security plugin is getting in the way?

I wonder if your .htaccess has some kind of rule in it that is doing something based on the referrer?

I’m just thinking of things that might be causing this.

My site got hacked but good last month and the company that cleaned it added Wordfence. That’s the one thing that has changed.

Can you share the contents of your .htaccess file?

    Thread Starter madgeshatbox

    (@madgeshatbox)

Yep, if I can figure out what that is ??

You’ll find it in WordPress’s root directory when you access your site via FTP.
