My first photoblog. What do you think?

  • Hi everybody!
    I am at my first attempt with WordPress.
    A few weeks ago I started a self hosted photoblog.
    I customized Thistle theme a bit.

    Since I have no experience I am keen to know your impressions.
    Be brutal if necessary. I probably deserve your critics!

    The site is in Italian, but I hope the language won’t be too much of a problem, since pictures are the main subject. Fundamental things should be guessable even if you don’t understand any Italian (I hope!).

  • Why not embed a Global Translator plugin? It’s not perfect, by no means, but it’s fun. I would have read your site with a generated version in English.

    Just a few observations:
    1. One thing that always bothers me in photo blogs is non – uniform photo format..
    2. the theme is a bit odd . somehow it gave me the feeling of something for kids. I think you should consider changing your color scheme.

    I didn’t think about automatic translation. It may be a good idea for my site. I will have a look at how Global Translator plugin works.

    Also thanks for the opinion on the color scheme. Now that Krembo99 mentioned it, I find it’s true: the colors I used may actually suggest something dedicated to kids. I did not realize that before, though. I will think about some changes.

    Talking about the picture format, I like to be able to crop pictures the way I like them better. That’s something that an uniform format wouldn’t allow me to do.

    I think, that in general a dedicated photoblog should have only one image per page, and NO EXTRAS, like a sidebar, or footer. All it needs is the image, a short description [or just title] and a header.

    I recommend that you lighten the background of the side bar it is a bit hard to see text.

    Thanks for your inputs too.

    At the beginning i tried some single column themes, which give more attention to the pictures, like Kradio says. But I found that I missed an extra column for things that I want to have, like some thumbnails, categories, a little welcome text, etc. I believe that those help navigation a bit.

    About the sidebar, if I change the colors to make the site look less ‘for kids’, as I was saying, I will also keep an eye on readability.
    The way it is now, if I make the background lighter, only the darker text will benefit from it, but I also have some white text…

    Nice blog, but the text in the side bar is little bit difficult to read, maybe both color are too close and too light. Maybe you can darken your text color.
