• Problem: Current Custom Community theme has messed up my website; wrong colors, menu bar gone, inability to navigate, etc.

    Events in sequence:
    * I visited my website, which appeared well.
    * Using another browser, I logged in as wp-admin and saw that there were 9 updates to be made (7 plugins, 1 theme, 1 WordPress ver.) I made 100% of the updates. No error messages displayed.
    * I returned to the other browser, that which does not show me logged into wp-admin, and refreshed. My site was entirely messed up. No menu bar, wrong background color, etc.
    * I contacted Bluehost, which walked me through doing a system restore from last night. The restore did not fix the problem. I then did a restore from 1 week ago. I got back my theme colors and menu bar, but no data/content appears on the first/home page; blank. Bluehost states that the error log shows a problem with the front-page.php file, line 30, but they would not work on fixing it, as they are hosts and not developers. The line read: <?php if( cc2_display_sidebar( ‘left’ ) ) : ?>
    * Switched to another theme. Saw even less content/functionality. Returned to CC theme, still an almost blank screen.
    * I called Bluehost again and got someone else who fixed the problem. We wiped away all files and then manually restored necessary files. Another way to say this is that rather than overwriting existing files, we deleted/cleared the space, and then did a fresh copy of the necessary files. I got my display back. Also, due to the restore, I had 9 updates I could make.
    * To test the problem, I updated only the Custom Community theme. BOOM. It was the culprit. My display messed up instantly.
    * We again did the deletion/copy of the website, got the display back. I then updated only the WordPress version to 4.1.1. Nothing bad happened. Next, I updated the 7 plug-ins. Nothing bad happened.

So now we know that the Custom Community ver. 2.0.25 is the culprit. What is the next step? Just stay with 1.17.13.1? I googled the theme name and didn’t get anywhere…probably just my exhaustion.

  • The support forum for Custom Community can be found here:

From another thread in that forum it seems there is a problem with that theme when running PHP versions earlier than 5.4

Also it looks like 2.0 was a complete rewrite of the theme and child themes written for earlier versions break.

Your best best is not upgrade until you’ve rewritten and tested your child theme with the new version.
