• Hi,

Since last week I see my IP address as blocked on the Firewall tab. Up till now it’s been blocked 2 times.

I have checked under Diagnostics and my IP shows correctly there.

Why does my own IP show as blocked and are there any consequences? So far I haven’t noticed any issues myself.

Thanks in advance for your support!

    Best,

    Daniela

  • Hi @ipanematravels,

Can you find your IP address from this link?

Please compare the above IP address with the IP address you are seeing in the firewall tab.

If they match, what should be happening is that you should not be able to access your WordPress site.

Please note that the IP address listed under diagnostics within WordFence is the server’s IP address. It is not your IP address.

    Hi @davedyc,

Now I am lost. The IP that comes as my IP via the check link is the same as the one I see on the Firewall tab and the one under diagnostics. And yet I can access my WordPress site.

    Is there something wrong?

    Thanks,
    Daniela

Are you accessing your website using localhost/ or a local IP address?

    Please try this:

    1. Make a file called test.php located in the document root (in the same folder as index.php)

    2. Inside, put this: <?php echo $_SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"];

    3. Go to your website at /test.php, for example (https://23.23.23.23/test.php)

Let me know if the output of this page is the same IP address as the one you’re seeing in the firewall settings.

    Hi Daniela,

First double check that Wordfence is detecting your IP address correctly.

Visit https://www.whatsmyip.org/ to find out your IP address as assigned by your internet service provider.

Open the Wordfence All Options page. Expand the General Wordfence Options section. Look for the line Your IP with this setting in the How does Wordfence get IPs subsection. If the IP addresses match then Wordfence is detecting IP addresses correctly.

The Blocking tab at the top of the Firewall page will open the Blocking page. The block table will provide a reason for why your IP address was blocked as long as that block still exists and hasn’t expired.

You can also open the Live Traffic tab on the Tools page and enable these advanced filters.

IP = enter your IP address here
    Security Event contains blocked
    Security Event = blocked:waf

This will then show all blocked visits from your IP address.

    Hi @ipanematravels,
I just wanted to add something. What does it say exactly under the Firewall tab where you are seeing your own IP? It is possible to lock yourself out from login without locking yourself out from the whole site, so perhaps that is what happened? If you can let us know the details of what you are seeing under the Firewall tab, that would help!

    Thanks!

    Hi guys,

I did all tests (including the one with test.php file above) and yet the blocked IP address and the IP from all results are the same.

@wfphil, I can’t see what the blocking is about as it has expired. I tried to filter, but I see results only from the last 4 days, so obviously the blocking is older.

@wfasa, on the Firewall it says:
    Top IP’s blocked (7 days)
IP (my IP) – Country (Netherlands) – Dutch flag – Block Count 2
And that’s it. If I click on 30 days the count changes to 3.

Then under Firewall Summary: Attacks blocked, I see:
    Block type: Complex
    Today 0
    Week 2
    Month 3

    Brute force: all are 0s

    Total:
    Today 0
    Week 3
    Month 4

    Thanks again guys!

    Best,
    Daniela

    Hi @ipanematravels,

Sorry for the extended reply. I’m stuck at this point, and because this doesn’t actually block you from using the website, it seems to be a database error.

What I mean is that Wordfence is reporting that your IP was blocked twice, but your IP isn’t being blocked right now.

    Dave
