• Started a blog at wwww.wellfedsp.com/blog in 2012. Kept up with it sporadically until some life emergencies took me away from it for good in early 2013. When I went back a few months ago to post again, ALL the sidebar stuff (console, bio, pic, archives, login, blogroll, etc) was gone.

Had my web guy check it out (he builds sites on WP all the time) and he’s stumped. Has no idea what’s up and how to fix it. I just got an email from WP updating the blog to the latest version of 3.9.2 a few weeks ago (probably something my web guy initiated), but that didn’t make a difference.

So, I can’t log into the blog to post anything else. There’s probably some backdoor into it, but I’m not tech-savvy enough to know what might be. Though, that’s besides the point. I want my blog back like it was! People can still visit the blog and see past posts, but as far as adding new ones, I can’t get in.

I have a second WP blog at https://www.wellfedwriter.com/blog, and if you visit both, you’ll see everything that’s in the sidebar of blog 2 that’s gone missing from #1.

Also, I notice when I do click the “Blog” link on my main nav bar of wellfedsp.com, it takes forever to take me to the page, like it’s really struggling.

    Any thoughts? Thanks much!

    Peter

  • What happens when you to try to login at:

    https://www.wellfedsp.com/blog/wp-login.php

(use that link if you’re presenting using a bookmark or a different url)

My first guess as to the problems you’re having with missing sidebar, is that your theme is not compatible with the recent version of WordPress. I would contact the site you purchased your theme from for instructions on that.

    Thanks Janet,

I’m obviously revealing how UN-tech-savvy I am, when I don’t even know the URL to log in!

So, yes, that DID get me into the console, so I could post if I wanted to, so that’s progress. But the bigger issue still remains.

When I go to that console, and pick an existing post, and click to view it, it takes me to the site (after a looooong time crunching…), but the sidebar stuff is still nowhere to be found…

But, thanks much for at least getting me back in the driver’s seat…;)

Non of your plugins are loading. Check to see that they are activated.

Do you know what version of wordpress your other blog is using? As that one is using the same theme and does not appear to be having the issues as you are here.

Any other differences between the two blogs that you can thing of might be helpful in figuring out what happened.

I have no idea how to do that (check to see if the plugins are activated), so I’ll pass this on to my web guy.

As for anything else different, again, nothing that I can think of, but that’s why I hire him to do this stuff for me. HE needs to be talking with you… I’ll see if I can get that to happen…

Thanks so much for your help so far…

    Hi Janet,

Okay, I passed on your ideas to my web guy, and here was his reply:

Peter, I updated and activated every single plugin and still nothing shows up.

Most if not all of your widget items are built-in ones for WordPress or custom html coding, so it shouldn’t be a plugin problem.

Hopefully, that info will help move along the discussion in the forum.

Thanks in advance for for any ideas from anyone! I’m all ears!

Contact the company you purchased the theme from. (You paid for support) and also contact your hosting company.

Be sure to tell them that there was an update to wordpress 3.9.2 when this happened.

Ideally, your web guy would help you out with some troubleshooting since he seems more familiar with your set up.

The theme wasn’t purchased, per se. I had a designer create it. More importantly, it’s the exact same theme as the one on my other blog (except colors; https://www.wellfedwriter.com/blog), and that one works perfectly. And THIS one worked perfectly, too for well over a year.

Given all that, would/could the theme still be an issue?

    Running:

    • WordPress 3.5.1
    • Thesis 1.6

    Running:

    • WordPress 3.9.2
    • Thesis 1.6

The current Thesis version is 2.1.9, so maybe older Thesis installs don’t play happy too well with new WordPress versions.

Time to speak to Mr Web Guy again I reckon.

Thanks much, Dave, I appreciate your looking into it. And I’ll definitely give him a shout with this…

    Thank you Dave!

Your web guy did purchase the theme, though he customized it for you.

    (@wellfedwriter1)

Well, it wasn’t the same person. I hired someone specifically to redesign the site, and he must have bought the theme, unbeknownst to me (I thought it was custom, but no matter, I still like it). My new web guy does my upkeep, but didn’t design it initially.

But, perhaps it’s time to look up that designer!

I guess my question now is (and I think I can guess the answer), if I update to the new version of WP for the site that is currently working fine, will it end up with the same issue?

    PB

Hard to say but in all probability, yes. You don’t need to be too hard on the old web guy since he used a reputable theme framework for your site. Your copy just hasn’t been updated.

If the new web guy has a development environment, he could locally clone both sites and try and fathom out where the issue lies.

    (@wellfedwriter1)

Now, we’re getting into “fuzzy” territory for me…. ??

What do you mean, Dave, when you say, “Your copy just hasn’t been updated”?

Thesis is a paid-for design and template manager for WordPress. You buy a plan which is either for 12 months renewable or lifetime of the product. Your sites have version 1.6 installed. Like I say, it’s now at v2.1.9.

Your former developer may have had a lifetime license but no matter what, you’re stuck on version 1.6.

    (@wellfedwriter1)

    Thanks Dave,

“Your former developer may have had a lifetime license but no matter what, you’re stuck on version 1.6.”

What does that mean? If he has a lifetime license, could he tinker with my sites and make them work?

Again, I’m out of my technical depth here…

    Thanks for any insights…

    PB
