• Can you help me, when i search for my site on Google the url on some of the pages is coming out as https (eg https://aquaheat.org.uk/plumber-in-balham/) and displaying this message –
This is probably not the site you are looking for!
You attempted to reach aquaheat.org.uk, but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as *.hosts.co.uk. This may be caused by a misconfiguration on the server or by something more serious. An attacker on your network could be trying to get you to visit a fake (and potentially harmful) version of aquaheat.org.uk.
You should not proceed, especially if you have never seen this warning before for this site.

What do I do? – I need the idiots version.

  • Ultimately you cannot control what Google does, or does not, show in its search results. All you can do is ensure that all of the links on your site are correct and submit an xml sitemap to Google in the hopes that it will re-index your site sooner rather than later.

    seems to be a ‘bug’ at the moment with google;
a lot of my searches for Codex chapters come back with https: as well…

possibly check the google forums (?)

I understand what you are saying. I just don’t know why there are two pages and how to get rid of one of them.
How do I delete the https page?

Thanks The Sweeper. I hope you’re right. I’ve done this site for my husband and he is pretty annoyed at me!
I’ll check on the Google forums now!

The validation report shows both http and https at several places, especially in Google analytics, Google+, the theme style sheet, etc. See here.

    Thanks Krishna,
How do I get rid of the https?

It might be better to look at the validation report on the http version of the url. ??

I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with it. If I correct the problems that I can, will it get rid of the https pages?

    1. Check your preferred URL registered with Google, for instance go to your Google Analytics, Webmaster tools, Google+ etc. and make sure you enter the correct URLs
    2. See the report above (go to source – at the bottom) and see lines 10, 20, 25, 35, etc. and make corrections in your theme and other accounts.
    3. Similarly, you might have used https at several other places. Make corrections wherever you can.
    4. After making all the corrections, make a sitemap and submit to Google.

These are some of the things that you can do. Still the problem will not go away soon. It will take time.

There can be more embarrassment as you have to live with the following situations:
    1. Google will show 404 errors for all the URLs with https.
    2. All the cached Search Engine pages will show https wherever you had.
    3. If any people had linked to you with that still those will be followed and indexed by search engines.

So, it is not a quick process. Just make corrections and forget about the rest of the things so far your rankings, traffic, etc are not affected.

Esmi, you can find both the versions of the URL. They are already on the web. They will stay for some more time and Google will keep on reporting page not found, etc.

And the report that you quoted now shows 301 Moved Permanently.

    Thanks Krishna.

Will give it a go! What a nightmare!

Do you know what would have caused this in the first place?

Esmi, you can find both the versions of the URL.

I just meant that it would be easier to check the source for spurious https urls via an report on the http url

And the report that you quoted now shows 301 Moved Permanently.

But you can still access the report, yes?

But you can still access the report, yes?

Yes, now. It showed only a 301 when I checked first!

    Weird!
