• I have an unmanaged VPS that runs Ubuntu 12.04 on a 2 core CPU and 1024mb memory. It should be more than enough to host three rather small WordPress blogs.

But one of my older blogs, which has been online since 2006, is creating problems for me. Every time I post a new entry on that blog my server crashes. This has been an ongoing problem that has just gotten worse the last couple of months.

This is the server load just before I post a new entry:

    00:03:39 up 7 days, 8:52, 1 user, load average: 0.38, 0.35, 0.31

And this is the server load shortly after the post has been published:

    00:06:36 up 7 days, 8:55, 1 user, load average: 53.75, 21.38, 8.13

Sometimes the server is able to “cool down” on its own, after several minutes of downtime. But many times I have to restart the server to get everything running again. On a few occasions the database will remain unavailable after a server restart forcing me to run the repair tool from wp-admin. When I run the repair and optimize tool I always get this error:

“wp_utcvnt_options: Table is marked as crashed and last repair failed”

Despite this error my blog will be back up and running on normal levels again after doing the repair and optimization. That is until I post a new entry…

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

  • What version of wp are you using?

I am using wordpress version 3.6. These are the plugins I use:

    Akismet
    Bitly URL Generator
    Disqus Comment System
    Flattr
    Jetpack
    NGFB Open Graph+
    Pagebar2
    Simple Local Avatars
    VaultPress
    WordPress Related Posts
    WP Maintenance Mode (deactivated)

Have you tested this on another hosting environment to isolate the issue and see if it is a server issue?

Yes, I started out on a regular shared webhosting account on Dreamhost. A couple of years later I had to upgrade to their VPS because my blog was using too much server resources. And now, three months ago or so I moved to another VPS with better speed and specs.

So yes, I’ve tried several different server environments but I don’t see any improvements. My blog might be old, but its not big, it has less than 900 posts for example.

Have you spoke to your host to see if they can shed some light on why this is happening? It appears that it may be a server issue so if that is the case, you should speak with them about it since I’m not sure based off of the info you gave, how much help can be given here.

I would also say 900 posts is fairly big but maybe others can shine some light on it?

I have spoken with my host, but they put the blame on WordPress. So I don’t really know what to do right now. Anyone got any ideas?
