• I have recently migrated my website to a different hosting account, that will host multiple sites. As I already have a wordpress website at the root level, I had to place this migrated site into a sub directory. So the URL read newserver.com/oldwebsite.

Once I completed the migration I change the DNS settings of the olddomain to point to this directory on the new server. Sure enough when I type in the domain name it goes right there and loads.

However, if I type in the new server domain name and directory as a URL I also get the site showing up, with menus and logo but with a 404 page error.

How can I stop this from showing?

  • So your website sits on the server in newserver.com/oldwebsite
And you changed the DNS yourNewSite.com so it resolves to newserver.com/oldwebsite

But you can still get to the site if you type in newserver.com/oldwebsite? Which sounds plausible.

    Questions:
    1) did you switch your WordPress settings to point to newserver.com/oldwebsite or yourNewSite.com
    2) did you make any changes to the htaccess file?
    3) Did you resave on your permalinks page?

The answer is no to all those questions.

It was a straightforward migration to another directory on a different server, and then pointed the domain to that directory.
