• My hosting company just rolled out MariaDB and are claiming some major performance improvements when switching from mysql, just wondering if anyone has done the switch to MariaDB with a already installed and decent sized WordPress site/db

  • Don’t know who uses MariaDB, but I think it should not be a cause of any worries, as it is SQL based and open source. Seems to be well-tested too as it comes from the original SQL developers.

I use MariaDB, Nginx, PHP and WordPress and it works pretty good. I have fully described the whole installation here:
    https://varsanov.org/?p=166

    About MariaDB:
“MariaDB is based on MySQL and is available under the terms of the GPL v2 license. It’s developed by the MariaDB community with Monty Program Ab as its main steward. MariaDB is kept up to date with the latest MySQL release from the same branch.
In most respects MariaDB will work exactly as MySQL: all commands, interfaces, libraries and APIs that exist in MySQL also exist in MariaDB. There is no need to convert databases to switch to MariaDB. MariaDB is a true drop in replacement of MySQL! Additionally, MariaDB has a lot of nice new features that you can take advantage of.”

Looks like most hosts are moving to upgrade SQL to Maria DB. Good to see a discussion started.

Here’s a nice screencast from the Maria DB community showing how to install Maria DB, and work with SQL.

well it seems that more and more Linux Distro’s are leaving MySQL since Oracle is not very open so to say.

They are replacing it with MariaDB

@asen.Varsanov excellent write-up! Are you saying that WordPress runs natively on mAriaDB? Without mods I mean? I found another but fairly old how-to on https://byte-consult.be/2011/06/07/running-wordpress-nginx/ that talks about having to modify WordPress code which has always stopped me from attempting the move because an easy upgrade of WordPress is no longer an option… If WordPress needs no modifications anymore, there is no reason to not switch to mAriaDB ??

@ravanh thanks man and sorry for answering late, but saw your question just now (and I checked the thread completely randomly actually :D). Yes WordPress runs completely natively on Nginx and MariaDB, and all the steps that I described in my post are the *actual* steps that I did to install everything. No mods nothing, just the simple install. Since then I have upgraded MariaDB and Nginx several times and wrote how I did that too (also all *actual* steps Upgrade Nginx and keep it up-to-date the easy way, Upgrade source installation of MariaDB server and Upgrade source installation of PHP).

@asen.Varsanov That’s great news. I’ll be reading up on your latest experiences ??

Looks like I need to get reading, coding and uploading. Thanks for keeping the ball rolling @asenv & @ravanh

@avi_lambert keep rolling rolling rolling, keep rolling rolling rolling :D.
I had to move the blog temporarily to a free hosting, because I am hosting it on my own server, but now I am changing ISP and there will be a time gap where I won’t have internet connection. I saw that I gave the “dyndns” links in the previos post, which *may* (is dyndns slow with redirection to my domain or what … , we will see, but now it does not work) not work. So here are links that work:
[Links removed. Do not try to promote your site through these forums]
That should work for now. ??

Asen.Varsanov – Sorry about that, I think we mis-read what the links were (the context of the post threw us off). You were just linking to the new versions of this, right? https://varsanov.org/?p=166

Yes these are the correct and I am sorry and apologizing for my bad language [you know in which post]. I really did not have intention to promote my site, just to give option to the broken links. Thanks for your understanding, I will try not to be so rude (actually I am trying that for long time …)
