I recently wanted to move my wordpress blog from one domain to another so I backed up my wp_content folder and database (stupidly I forgot to backup my mnt folder but thats not too important for me).
I installed wordpress on the new site and copied across the wp_content folder from the backup. Next I used phpmyadmin to import my database.
The problem I’m having is that my site keeps going down after a few minutes (it just says page not found). Even when its up all the links point to the old site rather than the new one so I have no themes etc. loaded. I have changed the path under options but it makes no difference.
I tried installing a new install of wordpress and this works fine and stays up.
What am I doing wrong when I import?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • Instead of exporting and importing data through phpmyadmin, you may want to try exporting WP data with an export plug-in. It should go smoothly in this way. You will probably need to fix article order and also add blogroll links manually, I think.

    Good luck

Why don’t you just export the post and comments tables and import those tables into the new database? Plus any plugin tables you are using.

Thanks for the replies. Is there any plug-in you would particularly recommend?
I only have a .sql file so can no longer export only those tables. Unless there is a way to edit this file?

Have you opened it? Open it in a text editor.

Yes I have but its like 20 pages long. How would I edited out the tables i don’t want? There are no carriage returns, its just one long jumble of stuff.

Managed to get it up and running. Just in case anyone else has this problem, I did the following.

    1) Installed wordpress in the original location.
    2) Installed https://technosailor.com/2006/07/05/wordpress-to-wordpress-import/ and made xml back up.
    3) Installed wordpress in new location.
    4) Imported the xml file.

    No attachments but it works!
