• Hi there,

I am managing a new blog called STEM+D while the url is stemplusd.com because domains can’t have symbols, as + (plus). So I couldn’t have a domain like stem+d.com
I am also using Google Webmaster Tools since 10 days. For XML sitemap I am using WordPress SEO by Yoast.

When I digit on google search the name of my blog, STEM+D, it doesn’t show up. But when I search for stemplusd it does. Where’s the problem? It could be that my blog name has the symbol “+”, while my url has not? Or it just the fact that the blog is new so it doesn’t receive lot of clicks yet?

By now, according to webmaster tools, Google has indexed 133 urls.

Thanks a lot for the support you might give me!
    Luca

  • Hi there,

You shoudn’t rather worry about this difference between site name and domain name. It probably has nothing to do. I’d rather say just be patient and also try to constantly (but not too massively) fill up your website with some good, valuable content. And by “valuable” I mean things that will be of some help for your visitors/readers.

Sometimes it can take quite a long time for Google to properly index and – as I call it – “understand” the website. Also you should probably dive a little into the SEO topics.

    Good luck!

    Hello Adam,

thank you very much for your reply. So, do you think that the presence of the symbol “+” in my blog name is not a problem? I am worried that Google recognize the “+” as a request to search for the word “stem” related to “d” and not the full name “stem+d”… I don’t know if can explain!

    Luca

All right, I didn’t get what you mean exactly at first. Although everything I said before remains still valid I must say that you’re probably thinking right!

Well, it’s quite an unfortunate case as the “+” sign is a basic operator used by Google. When you type stem+d it does actually search – just like you say – for stem and d.

Try this phrase for example: “stem+d home” (put the phrase in search field within quotation marks) and you’ll find your site indexed by Google.

So, the question is: is there any workaround this problem other than changing the name of your site? In my opinion yes, there is. However it’ll take quite a lot of work and time. We’re back on SEO – build content, build links, be patient and wait.

I might be wrong of course but I cant see any other way…

    Hi Adam,

you catched the problem. So do you think that with the right work, Google will finally dispaly my page even searching stem+d without quotation marks?

    Thanks a lot!

    Luca

    STEMD,

I guess it should but I’m not entirely sure. Anyway it’s always good to identify other important phrases/keywords that are relevant to what you are doing.

From what’s said on your “about” page I can see STEM+D is mainly about modern design and technology and industry standards in design. That being said, most of the visitors that will ever come to the site will probably find it by searching for phrases related to forementioned design – which is absolutely good.

As long as you don’t run company that has a largely recognizable brand, depending only on “brand search” isn’t quite a good way to gain any traffic on site. What I would do in such a situation would be:

    1. Put a little seo work for “brand” (stem+d) but not too much
    2. Promote the brand (along with its domain) extensively on- and offline like setting-up e-mail, blog and forum signatures and printing some kind of “slogan” along with the brand name and its web address on leaflets or catalogues (if you ever print them) and business cards
    3. Put a lot, lot of seo work for other phrases/keywords related to the main content of your site

As it comes to SEO this is how it would work:

People search for some “design-related” content -> they find your site -> they visit it -> they like it or they like a particular content -> some of them promote it (make sure there’s plenty of easy ways to promote the content via social networks) -> other people see it -> some of them like it -> … it goe’s on like that.

After all, sometime in a future people start to recognize the brand, start to like it, talk about it and that’s the moment when everything starts to work like a charm.

For sure, there’s a lot of factors you need to care for and a lot of things that may go wrong. That means a lot of knowledge to gain and a lot of work to be done but I do belive it’s the best way. And it is certainly worth it! ??

    Hey Adam,

wow your great! I’m trying to work a little with SEO. As I’m not an expert, I’m doing it by trying, searching for tips on google, experimenting..
As my profession is press office and public relations, I will send a press release to several medias (including websites and blogs) about the project and the blog.

But before doing that, I want to be sure if I should change the project name into STEMplusD or continue with STEM+D…

SEO speaking: what do you advice?

    Luca

    Luca,

Good question… Judging strictly by SEO factors I would change “+” to “plus”. On the other hand – it depends if the name is somehow strongly related to a brand.

IMHO, if it IS possible (once again – that’s only from the SEO point of view) “STEMplusD” could be better than “STEM+D”. At least for Google ??

Yet, should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask – i’ll be happy to help as far as I’m able.
