Nav Menus, Format, Lacking Features

    In testing out 3.6 I noticed what I felt to be a couple simple features lacking in the Nav Menus. With the new accordion-based UI it makes it easier to simply hide and open a short list of pages,categories,formats, ect instead of scrolling down what could be a long clunky list, GREAT! However, the “format” tab does not offer the ability to add a “standard post format” to your menu. If I want to create a menu of post formats like I would with categories or anything else for that matter I have to assign a category to all my standard post formats, then add all my formats to my menu and one category, doesn’t make sense. A standard post format IS a format right? Shouldn’t it be available to add to your menu instead of creating a work around situation like this.

    Second is why can I only open 1 accordion tab at a time. If I want to add a page and a format and a category to the same menu why can I not open and close as many as I would like to compare and see my options… shouldn’t there also be a “open all/close all”” button. I love the grouped accordion style UI and know it will help cut back on the size of the nav menu sidebar (especially when using an e-commerce plugin like woocommerce that adds several menu categories to this page) BUT, being able to have multiple tabs open at the same time is something we (designers/developers) have been use to since the addition of custom nav menus. I do believe this area needed an overhaul and it is going in the right direction, but I dont believe taking this away is a plus. I love WordPress, and their dedicated team so know this is not a bash, just good old constructive criticism. I want WordPress 3.6 to result in an amazing UX. A good UI creates a good UX, but im sorry the new nav menu UI is not giving this designer a good UX.

    Actually, no. ‘Standard’ posts are posts that lack a post format.

    Accordions by nature only allow opening one section at time. This accordion is in-line with say the main admin menu only having one open section at a time.

    As for opening and closing as many as you want, you can still do that, one at a time. AFAIK your selections will stick even if the sections aren’t expanded.

    1. So “standard” posts are posts without a format, I would still love to be able to add them to a nav menu without doing a category work around, or since they dont have a format are you saying that this is not possible.

    2. Since Accordions by nature only open one at a time, like with the main nav menu, WordPress saw the need to expand the main nav menu to include a hover, fly-out feature. Im sure their were many reasons behind this but a benefit of it is that you can see and compare multiple area at a time with just a hover.

    Im only saying this because our company builds 50-100 WordPress websites every year and the pro’s of 3.6 far outweigh its cons. If I have the ability to post an observation of something that I believe is a lack in ability, and get this ability added, then I am going to.

    Personally I like the new menu and how it only allows one area to be open it’s less confusing to me

    Elite – Have you considered joining in on the work for new releases before Beta? This is a little late in the game for fundamental changes, is all.

    For problem number one, I would make a page-template in my theme that listed all the posts by post-format, or rather the ones that are not a post format, and then link to that. No category needed.

    For number 2… What areas of comparison are you thinking of?
