Navigating to any wp-admin URL downloads the php template

  • I have an unusual problem on a recently launched site. As the title suggests, when I try to navigate to any of the wp-admin URL’s it just downloads that PHP file rather than direct the browser to that page.

    I have tried the usual debugging options but that hasn’t been any help. I doubt it is the theme or the plugins because we have launched a group of websites which share the same theme and plugins and they do not experience the same issue.

    The WordPress install is 3.8.3 and I’ve been told not to upgrade to the latest version because it will create a conflict with qTranslate which is crucial to the bi-lingual site.

    Will is be safe to update the wp-admin and wp-includes folders over PHP with the latest version of WordPress? Should I try to replace these two folders with those included in the 3.8.3 download? I presume something along the way has been corrupted. Otherwise, please help suggest some other options for me to look into solving this problem.

  • It’s not about the theme or plugin. If your browser returns the php file, then your server is not rendering PHP. And if it only happens when you go to wp-admin, there there might be permission issue.

    Contact your hosting provider asap.

    Thank you! I just came onto this project a few weeks ago and I know that the client and hosting provider have got this site locked down tight so a lot of the problems we have run into usually come back to these security settings they have.

    Will the wp-admin folder permissions need to be 755?
