nbsp not displaying properly in IE

I inserted the following code: “nbsp;|nbsp;” between category links that are aligned horizontally below the header. This is displayed properly in Firefox and Opera, but not IE. In IE it appears that the nbsp isn’t being picked up and the ” | ” appears right next to the category link instead of in the middle of two links. Is there a fix to work around this?
