• This is my first post and I look forward to any advice you can provide!

I have a dilemma and I am not sure how to proceed, I would like to know what you would do.

I am about to create a new website using WordPress. I will need it in English and in French. I will also need a blog (only in English) and the blog will need it’s own theme.

I don’t want to install WP 3 times (one off the root for English, one at /fr/ for French and one at /blog/ for the blog).

Should I install WPMU, or rather “Create a network” with 3.0? Or is what I need possible using only one installation of WP?

I appreciate any help and if you have any questions or need more info, just let me know – Thanks!

[Moved to Mutisite for a more informed opinion]

  • You can have blog posts show up in /blog/ of your website by using a page template.

Everything you want, other than “and the blog will need it’s own theme.” can be done with one install.

Depending on the criteria (a blog being *that* different from the rest of the site might turn away visitors), you could still handle it with one.

Even still, in multisite, the /blog/ is off the main site anyway and is a reserved name.

    Hi Andrea,

    Thanks for the response!
OK, I didn’t think it could be a multisite.
Where could I learn more about customizing the blog, let’s say what items I might be able to have different and how to change it.
And if using only one install, is there a recommended plugin for a bilingual blog – maybe one where the English and French titles/content are entered on the same page. Would it matter if I didn’t want the blog to be in French?
And lastly, if it where to be separate installs, could I have a search bar on the homepage that could search through all three installations?

    Thanks again!

@coltonday — are you using different domains? Subdomains?

And lastly, if it where to be separate installs, could I have a search bar on the homepage that could search through all three installations?

no. Only if it were something like multisite.

is there a recommended plugin for a bilingual blog

    look at qtranslate and WPML

@bbruno – read his first post. subfolders.

    that’s kinda… broad. ??

On the front side, you can literally change *ANYTHING* because that the theme part. The rest is coding chops. Could be as simple as – well to change the tagline, change the text in the field in the backend, to change the colors via css, to ad a plugin for this function, to something you haven;t dreamed up yet thats highly custom. See? ??

OK, I didn’t think it could be a multisite.

Well, it *could*, there’d just be no real advantage.

Thanks for your response Andrea. I think I’m looking at a single install. I’ll look into those 2 plugins and look further into customizing the blog’s look. I appreciate your help!

    @bbruno – Same domain, no sub-domains.
