• Running the latest BuddyPress along with BuddyPress Media.

In order to allow more formats to be supported for user uploads, it looks like one would need to buy the BuddyPress Media addon called BPM-FFMPEG.

What I am trying to find out is how I can use the tools I already have on my servers to convert/compress practically any format I already support to be uploaded by BuddyPress users.

Reading about this plugin, it sounds like that is what this plugin will allow me to do, to use my own ffmpeg and other tools.

    Can you please confirm this.

    Thanks.

    Really, another dead plugin?

There must be someone on here who knows the answer. Please, someone share. It is becoming more and more difficult to use open source if no one bothers to help others.

Ok, I’ll wait patiently and maybe someone will reply ??

    Hello Voopress!
Sorry for delay with reply. This plugin is an open source and is written and supported in free time so you must understand that the developers can’t always find time to check on or reply to posts.
Our plugins provides you a way to encode videos using ffmpeg extension installed on your server. The encoded videos are displayed as custom post type, so this is not integrated with BuddyPress Media.
In the future we may look into integrating both together, but for now this functionality is not supported.

    Best regards,
    Alex

    Thanks for the reply :).

This is what I am trying to understand. I already have conversion and compression tools on my servers and am looking for something which would allow users to upload video on the site.
I found an addon for BP-media but it seems I already have that since my servers have the tools installed. This is the integrated aspect that you speak of I am assuming.

Either way, it sounds like you are saying that yes, this will allow users to upload video and use the tools already installed on the server.

I guess I should have simply tried it by now.

    Thanks.

    Hi Vooprss,

If I understood you correctly, you are saying that you have ffmpeg extension installed on your server. In this case, yes, the plugin will provide the functionality of converting videos to mp4 format from any other uploaded and creating a thumbnail from the frame specified.
The plugin registers custom post type – “videos” and allows you to have a front end interface for the users to upload the videos.
Just follow the guidelines in the settings: create pages for uploading and editing the videos and copy paste shortcodes on these pages, then assign the pages in the options for the plugin.
You would also be able to specify the allowed formats for uploading videos and the frame (in seconds) that show be used for the thumbnails.

Please let us know if you have any issues with the plugin and if you need any further assistance with it.

    Best regards,
    Alex

Correct. It did not make any sense to me to have to purchase another plugin which would allow users to upload video when my servers are always configured for video conversion and compression. Instead, I was hoping to find something which would put to use the many tools, including ffmpeg already installed on the server.

It sounds like your plugin will take advantage of the tools already on the server. I will give it a try then post some feedback.

    Thanks again for the reply.

Oh, one more question since I’ve not seen this anywhere. As the main site is a buddypress and the others are simply blogs, should this plugin be installed network wide or only on the main site.

    (@alexrayan)

You can activate the plugin site specific for each site since wp_posts table is usually site specific. Since the plugin registers custom post type and uses attachment hooks, it’s using wp_posts table to store it.
    Hope it helps.
Let me know if you need any other assistance with it when you install it.
I encounter a lot of issues connected to either differences between ffmpeg extension configurations or permissions on uploads directory.

    Best regards,
    Alex

In other words, you mean don’t activate it network wide then right? Sorry, just need clarification at times since I’m pretty new to WP.

    (@alexrayan)

    No problem.
Yes, it would be better to activate it per site if you need it on multiple sites since the options / settings interface is going to be different for each instance.
I have network activated WP Video Posts before though and it didn’t create any issues, so you should be fine either way.
I would activate it per site though since I haven’t tested Network Activate thoroughly.

I’ll do that then and make a post somewhere about blog users being able to have this option by contacting me.

I now better understand why you would want to activate it per site but I suppose a network version would also be nice where main settings are controlled by the main site owner.

    Thanks.

Sure thing, let me know how it goes.
Also, options under network would definitely be something to consider for the future updates of the plugin. Thank you for the input.

BTW, I notice in the plugins section that it says not for the current version. I’m running 3.5.1. I’ll install it anyhow as it looks like you’ve been updating it but thought I’d mention it ??
