Need Help: HTTP ERROR 500 Issue after updating this plugin

    I installed the WP Super Page Cache plugin on 28 Oct. There was a new update yesterday, and after I updated the plugin, my website immediately encountered an HTTP ERROR 500. I also can’t access to my wp-admin.

    I have checked the debug log (please see below), Could you please assist me in resolving this issue? Any guidance or support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  • Hello @brandohui ,I whould like to suggest please debug-mode on(from wp-config.php file),after one by one deactivate the plugin,change theme.I am damn sure you will get the issue and you will easily resolve it.

    One more thing if you are facing the issue related to space then I will recommended check in your space otherwise install this plugin Memory Usage, Memory Limit, PHP and Server Memory Health Check and Provide Suggestions (https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-memory/) in your site.

    For now, I would advise trying to deactivate the plugin via FTP.

    I have deactivated all my plugins via FTPS; however, it still doesn’t work, and I continue to encounter the White Screen of Death / HTTP ERROR 500.

    For themes, I only use Astra; there is no other theme. To deactivate it, should I add something to the theme folder name, such as themes_deactivated?

    In my wp-config.php file, I can only see:

    There is no other content in the file. Is it safe to add the following code to the wp-config.php file to view the error log?

    Yes! The code you mentioned should log any errors happening into /wp-content/debug.log. It would help a lot if you could do that first and let me know what gets logged in the file.

    The below should be enough to debug this:

    Now on to fixing the error, I suspect this is happening due to the advanced-cache.php file that Super Page Cache adds in the /wp-content folder. This is needed to manage the static cache. I suggest also trying to rename this to something like advanced-cache-bak.php, or deleting it. The error should be gone.

    @baicusandrei Thank you very much for your response. I have added the debug code to the wp-config.php file; however, I am unable to locate the debug.log in the wp-content folder. I have also renamed the advanced-cache.php file, but I am still encountering the White Screen of Death / HTTP ERROR 500.

    Just an update : it appears that the issue was related to the Astra theme. After disabling the Astra theme, my website is finally back to normal.

    However, when I try to click Astra, I receive a message stating: “There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions. but i haven’t received the email.

    Do you have any clues about this? Thank you very much for your assistance!

    If you previously added the mentioned cosntants in the wp-config.php file, the error should be displayed in the wp-content/debug.log file. However, from the screenshot you provided, it seems that the wp-config.php file only has those definitions. Depending on the hosting service, the file might not be located at the usual place (in the WordPress installation folder).

    If that’s the case, another solution to this, would be adding a debug.php file in the wp-content/mu-plugins directory. This would create a must-use plugin, active by default on the website. The error not being displayed on the frontend means that you have the fatal error handler enabled on the instance.

    You can use the following code to make sure that the errors are shown on the frontend:

    define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
    define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
    define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', true );
    define( 'WP_DISABLE_FATAL_ERROR_HANDLER', true );
    ini_set('display_errors', 1);

    This will display the errors directly on the website and make it easier to trace them.

    I would also appreciate if you could let me know what happens if you enable a WordPress default theme, like TwentyTwentyFour on the website, together with the Super Page Cache plugin. Is the 500 error still happening? If so, could you provide any errors that are logged to the wp-content/debug.log file, please?

    @baicusandrei I’m sorry, but I was unable to locate the debug.log. Since I didn’t want my website to be down for too long, I decided to hire a WordPress developer. Here’s what they shared:

    Main reasons:

    • The WordPress config file was removed by a person/plugin.
    • The PHP service had stopped.
    • The Astra theme was generating WordPress errors.

    The developer disabled the Astra theme, he also fixed the critical error problem, and the website is now back to normal. Thank you very much for your support!
