• I need to set up a website with 3 completely distinct blog-like sections. WP is installed and fully functional. The author for the 3 ‘blogs’ would be the same. I don’t think I need 3 installations of WP, or even WPMU to get it done. I was thinking of getting it done by setting the 3 sections to display specific categories of the same blog, unique to each section. Say the sections are ‘music’, ‘movie’ and ‘food’. In the music blog there’d be categories such as ‘rock’ and ‘jazz’, and subcategories such as ‘artists’ and ‘bands’. The ‘movie’ section would also be categorized by genre, and subcategorized by director, actors, and so forth.

It’d actually be only one blog, only one account, and the main categories would be on the same level (music, movie, food), but based on what I’ve read and seen here, I think it’d be possible to hide a few of them in some pages, and show only some other few in others.

Can it really be done this way? If so, how? Or, can someone think of a more proper set up to accomplish this? Just give me a light, I’m confused and kind of paralyzed. Thanks.

  • Probably that’s the way to go: categories and sub-categories.
Having the Category_Templates feature, you can even design a distinctive look for the 3 main categories.
You can have a “static” homepage (there are severeal Plugins for that) and from there link only to the 3 main cats. You can choose to show or not posts on this main page.

By default WP shows only posts from one category when a cat name is clicked.
Warning: again by default WP shows all the posts in a parent category and its children when a parent cat name is clicked. But there is workaround for that, you just have to find it…

I always draw a diagram on paper for a site with complicated structure and try to figure out which feature of WP would help me to achieve what I need.
