need help taking over avada run website

hello all,

so i am a newcomer to all things regarding web development, but I do have some basic html and css knowledge. Essentially I am very confused trying to take over a wordpress website from the previous manager. It uses the avada theme, and try as I might I cannot seem to grasp it. Do i need to purchase and download avada independently to be able to use the theme successfully? if you know of any basic wordpress guides or avada guides, please let me know. so far I have had little success.
