• I had an issue where I wanted to use a certain plug in and it requires a newer version of PHP, which the hosting the site was on did not support. Godaddy said that they could move me to a new host service, but the old would be removed. I did an XML backup, but they removed the server before I could do a full back up.

I was able to use the XML to pull over there blog text content. That is all I need is the blog stuff since the old site was custom and the WP was installed into the /blog directory to be used as a blog.

I was also able to have Godaddy restore the old hosting, but the WP site is not accessible via the web to do another XML backup. I downloaded all the items int eh WP content folder and uploaded it to the new site via FTP. I used the XML and it added the main image and text, etc, but not the media galleries. I even used a find replace to replace the https://www.unitedriggingnycom/blog with https://www.unitedriggingnycom/. That is how I got the main images to work.

Given that I have the XML file and access to the files via FTP, is there anything I can do?

  • Just guessing but these are the blog posts you’re referring to:
    https://www.unitedriggingny.com/blog/

and this is your sign in:
    https://www.unitedriggingny.com/wp-login.php

You’ve explained quite a bit but perhaps I’ve misunderstood, can you elaborate on the main problem you’re having?

I’m a little confused as you seem to have the blog posts but also suggest cannot access WordPress through sign in, of course, I may be misinterpreting your query for which I do apologise.

The old WordPress site was used as a blog only and installed to the /blog directory.

It was on an older server with an old PHP version. I was told that I needed to move to a new server/hosting that would support a newer version of PHP. I did an XML back up of the posts, etc.

I then installed a new WP instance on the new server, this time as a full site. Godaddy deleted the data on the server before I could fully implement the XML import. The XML allowed me to import the posts with the text content, but all the images were broken.

I was able to have Godaddy restore the data to the old site/hosting. I can locate the files via FTP, but cannot log into the old WP install admin.

I tool the WP Uploads folder and dowloaded the contents and put them in the correct corresponding folder in the new host. Old was unitedriggingny.com/blog and the new is just uniteriggingny.com.

I then used a find an replace add on that allowed me to correct the image pointers, but it is not fixing the media galleries that are in the posts.

I am wondering if there is a way to do this with a php back up and import, amending the XML or maybe I am missing some data?

    Certainly an interesting scenario.
I think the penny’s dropped at my end and I’m hoping the below is close to what’s needed:

I ended up using a similar plug in where I took the urls and imported the media and then recreated the gallery. It was a PITA, but it is done. I need to go back and rename all the titles.

I am still trying to see if there is any other way to resolve in case it happens again.

good to read you’re making progress, sorry couldn’t help out but sometimes asking questions can give inspiration so I’m impressed with your problem soling skills!

It was more tedious than I hoped it would be, but I learned some new skills and lessons!

    Thanks for trying.
