Need help with page organization

Permalinks are definitely NOT the answer (see: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Permalinks )
On the other hand you could use the categories feature, so create a Joke-of-the-day category and put all your jokes into that, and on the frontpage use the <!–more–> tag to show only the image. Or, as you said, have more Pages for the jokes. Alternatively you can use the “name” anchor to jump to the right joke on a long Page.
I am not really sure what you want to achieve, so my answer is a bit vague.
