• Is this the right forum?

Starting today! Google is allowing us to add image license terms that will show up with all image searches!

It has only taken Google 20 freaking years to acknowledge COPYRIGHT for images, without which Google would be dead. They seem to be favoring photographers, but all of us can use this.

I still don’t understand schema at all. Is there a plugin or exact code I can add to mark all my cartoons, please? Does anyone know?

    adding tags: imageobject, rich results

  • I googled(!) this and it looks as if what they’re implementing is https://iptc.org/standards/photo-metadata/iptc-standard/ (based on https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9150868 )

    Thank you.

Reading further, I can see there are 3 fields: creator, copyright and credits. But I have no idea how to put these fields into an image!!

You need some way to set the IPTC metadata on your images.

By my reading of the Google requirements (here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/image-license-metadata), the minimum you need to set is “Copyright Info URL” and “Licensor URL”.

You might be able to set (some of) this on your camera. For example on my camera I can set “Artist” and “Copyright” which map to the IPTC fields “Creator” and “Copyright” and also sets the IPTC copyright status to “Copyrighted”. However, this does not actually set the required fields! You camera may vary.

You can use various software to set metadata on an image. For example Adobe Lightroom can do this (and if you set an import preset, all your images will have the fields set when you import).

In Lightroom’s Library module, under Metadata, “Copyright Info URL” is under “IPTC” and “Licensor URL” is under “IPTC Extension” by default.

Other metadata editing apps are available.

    Thanks!

I don’t have a camera right now – I need this for my cartoons, and use my iphone to upload them. I just downloaded Lightroom to my (old) Iphone, but I don’t think it has metadata, sadly…

Well. You can even edit EXIF data directly in Windows Explorer, for instance. See https://www.geckoandfly.com/7987/how-to-change-exif-data-date-and-camera-properties-with-free-editor/

If you’re using iPhone, then I’d suggest that you search the app store for “edit EXIF data”.

There is a plugin called Media Library Organizer that lets you edit meta data on images already uploaded into your WP media library (https://wpmedialibrary.com/). Sadly it doesn’t support the required licencing IPTC fields currently, but I asked if they would add this option and they thought it was a good idea. So might be an option if they do implement it.

I hope they will also allow bulk updates because I have almost 500 images on my site that I don’t want to re-upload…

    Wow, that’s terrific, @robsheppard !

Yes,thanks, I did find the edit Exif plugin, but I find it easier to input a lot of data on a bigger screen than my phone.

I also tweeted to Yoast about this a couple days ago and the developer himself, Joost de Valk, tweeted back to me that they are looking at it…so, one for my scrapbook!
