Hi – I just started using this plugin and I am completely baffled as to how I am supposed to compress just one image. I already set it up and compressed all images using the button, however a couple of the images were not hosted on our site, and now I don’t know how to compress them. They are 1.5 MB each right now, and hindering our page speed big time.

I see that the Media claims to have 7 compressions of this image, but I don’t see anywhere how I am supposed to select which one, or even find one which is of a usable size. Can someone please advise me? Much appreciated.

    Hi srossand,

How unfortunate that you are having trouble understanding how the plugin works.

If you used the Compress All Images tool all the images that are uploaded to your WordPress website are compressed. For each of these images you will have different sizes, WordPress itself makes around 5 and some plugins or themes make even more. These are effectively all different files which need to be compressed individually.

On the Settings > Media page you can enable/disable all the different sizes for your images. It is up to you to select the ones your website uses. We cannot know because that depends on your own settings. If you want to be on the safe side it’s best to compress all the sizes. Though you can also take a look around in the content and see which sizes are commonly used and only compress those. At least always enable compression of the original image.

As for the images not hosted on your site. You don’t have any control over the content on another server so you cannot compress those images. If you want to serve a compressed version of them you will need to download those images, upload them to your own WordPress site and use them from there. ( Be wary of copyright when doing this though )

Hope to have informed you well. If you need more advise don’t hesitate to follow up here or at [email protected].
