Need to regenerate thumbs to work with responsive images in 4.4

With responsive images dropping in 4.4 we’ve had to install a plugin to disable the feature because the different sized images don’t exist yet.
To get responsive images working on sites where the images are hosted on the same server as WordPress we can install another plugin to regenerate thumbs.
But on sites running Windows Azure Storage we get “The originally uploaded image file cannot be found” errors.
Is it possible that an option could be built in to the plugin to perform this function? Or do I need to contact the author of the regenerate thumbs plugin we’re using to get them to provide support for externally hosted images?
